Capital: Palikir

Palikir, capital of the Federated States of MicronesiaPalikir – The federal capital of the Federated States of Micronesia on Pohnpei Island.

Palikir is the capital of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), located in the interior of Pohnpei Island. Unlike nearby Kolonia, which developed as a coastal settlement and administrative center under earlier colonial governments, Palikir was developed primarily as a federal government center. It became the national capital in 1989, three years after the Compact of Free Association with the United States entered into force. Palikir contains the main institutions of the FSM national government, while Kolonia remains the capital of Pohnpei State and the island’s main urban and commercial center.

📜 Timeline of Palikir

1899: Spain sold the Caroline Islands, including Pohnpei, to Germany. This marked the beginning of German colonial administration in the islands; Palikir was not established by German colonists in 1848.

1914: Japan occupied the Caroline Islands during World War I and later administered them under a League of Nations mandate.

1947: Pohnpei became part of the United Nations Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, administered by the United States after World War II.

1979: The Constitution of the Federated States of Micronesia entered into force on May 10, establishing the constitutional government of the FSM. This was not the date of full independence from the U.S.-administered trusteeship.

1986: The Compact of Free Association between the Federated States of Micronesia and the United States entered into force on November 3. The United States recognized the FSM as an independent sovereign state, and the U.S. trusteeship relationship ended for the FSM.

1989: Palikir became the national capital, replacing nearby Kolonia. A purpose-built government complex was developed to house federal institutions.

Today: Palikir remains the seat of the FSM national government, while Kolonia continues as the capital of Pohnpei State and the island’s main population and commercial center.
