North America Capitals Quiz

Most Isolated Capital Cities in the World
The most isolated capital cities in the world are Canberra and Wellington when isolation is measured by distance to the nearest other national capital. They sit about 2,326 km apart, farther than any other capital-to-nearest-capital pairing.
This ranking uses great-circle distance, meaning the shortest distance over the earth’s surface. It does not measure travel time, flight availability, population density, airport access, or distance from the nearest large city.
How This Ranking Measures Isolation
Each capital is measured against the closest other national capital or accepted seat of government.
Distances are approximate and rounded, so small differences may vary by coordinate source.
Dependent territories and subnational capitals are not ranked, even when they are geographically remote.
Data note: Nauru has no official capital; Yaren District is included as the location of government offices. Jakarta is used for Indonesia because, as of 2026, it remains the capital until a formal decree transfers capital status to Nusantara.
Top Three Most Isolated Capitals
Canberra and Wellington
Australia and New Zealand form the clearest pair in this ranking. Their capitals are separated by the Tasman Sea and are about 2,326 km apart.
Dili
Timor-Leste’s capital is isolated by island geography at the eastern edge of the Indonesian archipelago. Its nearest listed counterpart is Bandar Seri Begawan.
Ngerulmud
Palau’s capital replaced Koror as the official capital in 2006. Its nearest national capital is Manila, far across the western Pacific.
Ranking of the Most Isolated Capital Cities
The table ranks capitals by how far each one is from its nearest other national capital or accepted seat of government. Distances are rounded to the nearest kilometer and mile.
| Rank | Capital City | Country | Nearest Other Capital or Seat | Approx. Distance | Region |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Canberra | Australia | Wellington, New Zealand | 2,326 km / 1,445 mi | Oceania |
| 1 | Wellington | New Zealand | Canberra, Australia | 2,326 km / 1,445 mi | Oceania |
| 3 | Dili | Timor-Leste | Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei | 1,904 km / 1,183 mi | Southeast Asia |
| 4 | Ngerulmud | Palau | Manila, Philippines | 1,684 km / 1,046 mi | Micronesia |
| 5 | Jakarta | Indonesia | Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei | 1,528 km / 949 mi | Southeast Asia |
| 6 | Reykjavik | Iceland | Dublin, Ireland | 1,495 km / 929 mi | North Atlantic |
| 7 | Brasilia | Brazil | Asuncion, Paraguay | 1,457 km / 905 mi | South America |
| 8 | Port Moresby | Papua New Guinea | Honiara, Solomon Islands | 1,403 km / 872 mi | Oceania |
| 9 | Victoria | Seychelles | Mogadishu, Somalia | 1,348 km / 838 mi | Indian Ocean |

| 15 | Astana | Kazakhstan | Tashkent, Uzbekistan | 1,110 km / 690 mi | Central Asia |
Some older lists show Koror for Palau, but the current official capital is Ngerulmud. Some lists also use Jakarta’s older capital status without noting the Nusantara transition issue; Jakarta remains the capital until the formal transfer is completed.
Why These Capitals Are So Far Apart
Ocean gaps dominate the top
Most of the highest-ranked capitals are on islands or in archipelagos. Canberra and Wellington, Dili, Ngerulmud, Reykjavik, Port Moresby, Victoria, Palikir, and Honiara all owe much of their isolation to water.
Continental isolation is different
Brasilia, Ulaanbaatar, Santiago, and Astana are not island capitals. Their isolation comes from large land areas, mountain barriers, deserts, steppe regions, or sparse neighboring capital networks.
Nearest capital is not nearest city
Dili is much closer to parts of Indonesia and northern Australia than it is to many capital cities. This ranking only asks one question: how far is the nearest other national capital?
Capital Notes for the Highest-Ranked Cities
Canberra, Australia
Canberra is an inland planned capital in the Australian Capital Territory. Its nearest national capital is Wellington, across the Tasman Sea. The city is not Australia’s largest city; Sydney and Melbourne are much larger urban centers.
Wellington, New Zealand
Wellington sits at the southern end of New Zealand’s North Island. It is geographically far from Australia’s political center, and no other independent country capital sits closer than Canberra.
Dili, Timor-Leste
Dili is a coastal capital on the island of Timor. Although Timor-Leste is close to Indonesia geographically, the nearest other capital by great-circle distance is Bandar Seri Begawan in Brunei.
Ngerulmud, Palau
Ngerulmud is one of the world’s smallest national capitals by population and administrative footprint. It is located on Babeldaob Island, while Palau’s former capital, Koror, remains the country’s main urban center.
Common Point of Confusion
Isolated capital does not always mean isolated city. Perth is often described as one of the world’s most isolated large cities, but it is not a national capital. Honolulu, Nuuk, Papeete, and Stanley are also remote in different ways, but they are not ranked here because they are not capitals of independent countries.
Another confusion is official capital versus seat of government. Nauru has no official capital, so Yaren District is treated only as a government-seat reference point. Bolivia also has a split arrangement: Sucre is the constitutional capital, while La Paz is the seat of government.
Other Remote Capitals That Often Appear in Discussions
| Capital | Country | Why It Feels Remote | Why It Is Not Higher Here |
|---|---|---|---|
| Funafuti | Tuvalu | Small Pacific atoll capital | It is closer to Suva than the top-ranked capitals are to their nearest counterparts. |
| Port Vila | Vanuatu | Island capital in the southwest Pacific | Suva is roughly 1,070 km away, keeping it just below the top group. |
| Port Louis | Mauritius | Indian Ocean island capital | Antananarivo and Moroni reduce its nearest-capital distance. |
| Mexico City | Mexico | Large inland capital far from many major capitals | Guatemala City is a little over 1,000 km away. |
| Male | Maldives | Small island capital in the Indian Ocean | Sri Lanka’s capital area is much closer than many readers expect. |
FAQ
What is the most isolated capital city in the world?
By distance to the nearest other national capital, Canberra and Wellington share first place. Each is about 2,326 km from the other.
Why are Canberra and Wellington tied?
Canberra’s nearest national capital is Wellington, and Wellington’s nearest national capital is Canberra. Because the same distance applies in both directions, they form a tied pair.
Is Reykjavik the most isolated capital in Europe?
Yes, among independent European countries, Reykjavik is the most isolated by nearest-capital distance. Its closest national capital is Dublin, about 1,495 km away.
Why is Perth not on this list?
Perth is not a national capital. It is the capital of Western Australia, a state within Australia, so it is outside the scope of a national capital ranking.
Does the ranking change if travel time is used instead of distance?
Yes. Flight routes, ferry links, airport hubs, visa rules, and seasonal service can make a capital feel more or less remote than its straight-line distance suggests.
