    What This Quiz Covers

North America capital quizzes can be trickier than they first appear. Many learners remember the largest cities first, but capitals are not always the biggest or most famous cities. The United States uses Washington, D.C., not New York City. Canada uses Ottawa, not Toronto. Belize uses Belmopan, not Belize City.

The quiz also includes Caribbean island countries where capital names are easy to mix up, such as Saint John’s, Basseterre, Roseau, and Kingstown.

Data Note: This quiz focuses on sovereign countries commonly included in North America geography lists. It does not include dependent territories such as Greenland, Bermuda, Puerto Rico, or the Cayman Islands.

    Capital Names That Need Care

The hardest North America capital questions often involve famous cities that are not capitals, or Caribbean capitals that sound similar at first glance.

    • Canada uses Ottawa, not Toronto, Montreal, or Vancouver.
    • United States uses Washington, D.C., not New York City.
    • Belize uses Belmopan, although Belize City is more widely recognized by many learners.
    • Honduras uses Tegucigalpa, one of the longer capital names in the region.
    • Saint Kitts and Nevis uses Basseterre, while Saint Vincent and the Grenadines uses Kingstown.
    • Trinidad and Tobago uses Port of Spain, a name that can be confused with Spanish or European geography.
