Dodoma is the official capital of Tanzania and the country’s main center of national government. The decision to transfer the capital from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma was made in 1973, partly because of Dodoma’s central location. Government institutions have moved to the city in stages, while Dar es Salaam remains Tanzania’s largest commercial and financial center.

Mtumba Government City and the Continuing Government Transfer
Dodoma is already Tanzania’s official capital. The continuing development of Mtumba Government City is therefore not a change of capital. It is part of the long-running process of concentrating ministries, public institutions, and national administrative functions in the Dodoma area after decades in which many remained based in Dar es Salaam.
On June 19, 2026, Tanzania’s Prime Minister’s Office reported continued government investment in Mtumba after an inspection of ongoing projects. The work included ministry buildings, institutional facilities, and supporting infrastructure intended to improve the delivery and coordination of government services.
On September 7, 2026, the Prime Minister’s Office announced that an inauguration was planned for September 8 at Mtumba Government City. The announced program covered 26 ministry office buildings, 11 government institutions, and 57.1 kilometers of paved roads. The government also said the completed buildings could accommodate 18,510 employees. The announcement described the planned ceremony; it did not by itself confirm that the inauguration had taken place.
The government’s 2026–2031 planning documents also record continued coordination of the move to Dodoma and construction within Government City. The second phase includes dozens of buildings for ministries and public institutions. This means the legal capital transfer is settled, while the physical concentration of state offices in Dodoma remains an active development process.
Dodoma is Tanzania’s official capital and the center of its national administration. The continued development of Mtumba Government City is bringing more ministries, institutions, and government infrastructure together in the capital region.
