Harare is the capital and largest city of Zimbabwe. Founded as Fort Salisbury in 1890, the city developed into the country’s main center for government, finance, commerce, education, and culture. It lies on Zimbabwe’s high plateau at an elevation of about 1,480 meters, giving it a milder climate than many lower-lying cities at similar latitudes. The city was known as Salisbury until 1982, when it was officially renamed Harare.

1935: Salisbury received city status.
1980: Salisbury became the capital of the newly independent Republic of Zimbabwe.

2024: Zimbabwe introduced Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) as its local currency. Its ISO currency code, ZWG, replaced the former ZWL code on international systems.
Today: Harare remains Zimbabwe’s national political, administrative, commercial, and diplomatic center.
